Let there be light

CNN is reporting that Congress is considering extending daylight savings time. I think it's a great idea, as I see no point in sleeping through well-lit early mornings. Why not have the daylight hours on the clock overlap with the daylight hours in nature? That said, does anybody else think the following quote from Ed Markey is kind of dumb?
"The more daylight we have, the less electricity we use."

We're not going to have more daylight. Congress isn't actually creating light, they're just shifting the artificial construct we call "clock time" to better reflect the passage of "natural time". Why not just say that? Nitpicky, I know, but it certainly seems to represent some degree of detachment from reality.
